Danfoss Inter-Club Competition 2009

This year the annual inter-club between Loch Achonachie A.C. & Dingwall A.C. was held on Lochs Borralan and Urigill just east of Ledmore. A record 26 hopeful souls, 17 Achonachie and 9 Dingwall, set out from Conon Bridge cark park at 07:30 sharp on the long trek into West Sutherland Loch Borralan is beside the road where as Uragill is a stiff mile over the hill. Since the pub is at the end of Borralan it proved to be the most popular, if not the most productive venue. The day was bright, hot and sunny with a strong NE wind. 9 heroes climbed over to Uragill and this proved to be the winning tactic as the 4 heaviest bags; all Achonachie, came off this very productive and sporting loch. At the weigh in it was clear that it was another emphatic Achonachie triumph with 101 trout to Dingwall’s 43. Top rod and winner of the Achonachie Quaich was Lewis Ross with 22 fish for 7lb and ½oz. Best trout was Ali Hunter at 12oz who is this year’s keeper of the Danfoss shields. Top rod for Dingwall A.C. and winner of the Dingwall wide mouthed bass trophy, was Grant MacKenzie with 18 trout for 4lb 9oz. Well done to Grant for winkling 18 trout out of Borralan. Billy MacGregor collected, for the second year in a row, the Dingwall dry bag cup. Lastly, but not least, the wooden spoon went to Alex Mark who weighed in zilch but continued to lip on about all the small fish he had to return. Not good enough Alex, not for a man of your ability who came 3rd in the winter league. Let us not forget our perennial spoon man Geordie Groat who also caught nothing but avoided the spoon by keeping his gob shut and head down.

Set out below is the full result:

Winning Team : Loch Achonachie A.C.
Top Rod : Lewis Ross
Heaviest Fish : Ali Hunter / Grant MacKenzie
Wooden Spoon: Alex Mark

The competition meal was at the Altnacealgach Motel, where the ice cold Amstel lager was well appreciated by those roasted in the bog on a glorious, hot sunny day. The food was plentiful and excellent which was just as well as the appetites generated during a day’s competition is fierce. Many thanks go to the staff at Altnacealgach for their courtesy whilst looking after our group and I’m sure we will return in the not too distant future. I would also like to extend both club’s thanks to Spa coaches, who, year in year out, take us safely out to some of the remotest areas of the highlands. Finally, it was good to see such a good turn out for the Danfoss which suggests that the future of this well enjoyed competition is bright.
